Twitter is expected to introduce more conventional ads


A little over six months after the company raised a gigantic round of financing that valued it at close to $4 billion, Twitter is in negotiations to close other massive round, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal . The latest series could put a value of $7 billion on the real-time information network, the WSJ said. Like its fellow tech stars — LinkedIn, Groupon, Pandora and others — Twitter is clearly taking advantage of what appears to be a red-hot market for technology stocks. But can it generate enough revenue to justify that kind of lofty valuation?
LinkedIn was the first to crack the public markets in the latest round of stock offerings, withan IPO in January that valued the company at $4 billion. But it was Groupon that really set the markets on fire, with a controversial filing that could value the four-year-old company (which turned down a rumored $6-billion acquisition offer from Google) at more than $20 billion. Then came Pandora, which went public last month at a valuation of close to $3 billion, despite the fact that the company isn’t profitable — and may never become so.
Facebook has also been doing its part to push tech-company valuations up, although it has done so from within the private markets, by raising more than $2 billion in funding through a Goldman Sachs-led syndicate and other entities such as Digital Sky Technologies. Those deals and the trading in secondary shares on exchanges such as SecondMarket have given the company a market value estimated at $60 billion. So far, Twitter has also avoided the public markets in favor of the traditional venture-funding route.
While Twitter may not be as clearly unprofitable as Pandora — whose business model has been criticizedbecause its costs continue to increase as it grows — the company has yet to prove it can generate enough revenue to justify a $7-billion valuation. Although the company’s actual finances are unknown, estimates from third parties such as eMarketer suggest Twitter is likely to produce $150 million in revenue this year from its core advertising features: namely, Promoted Tweets and Promoted Trends. While that figure is expected to continue growing next year, will it do so at a rate that makes $7 billion look reasonable?

According to several recent reports, Twitter is expected to introduce more conventional ads directly into the streams of its users soon, but whether this is going to be received positively by the Twitter community remains to be seen. Many users have said in the past they wouldn’t tolerate ads in their feeds (although the company could potentially start charging users to remove those ads and generate revenue that way). The company is also planning to offer an automated system that would allow businesses to create and promote their own ads.

The biggest challenge for Twitter when it comes to generating revenue and/or profits — as we’ve argued in the past — is that the company is effectively a media entity, whether it wants to be or not. It’s a real-time publishing and information network, which means people see it primarily as a utility of sorts. Adding revenue-generating mechanisms to that kind of service isn’t easy to do, since users often see these mechanisms as intrusive. But traditional forms of banner-style advertising, the main tool for most media companies and publishers, likely aren’t going to produce much bang for the buck.

Apple will embrace the mid-range mobile phone market

On Monday, Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore told his clients to expect Apple to release two iPhones, one of which would be an affordable device to help Apple grab a part of the pre-paid mobile market share. But BMO Capital analyst Keith Bachman says Apple is all about making exciting high-end devices, and he doesn't see them releasing a low-end phone this year. Bachman believes that AT&T's re-marketed iPhone 3GS will be the phone Apple uses to hook budget-conscious consumers.

In March, reports did surface that Apple COO Tim Cook said Apple was looking at the prepaid market and doesn’t want its products to be “just for the rich." Plus recent rumors have supported Apple releasing either the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 in 2011. So is it crazy to believe that Apple will break tradition and announce two devices this year?
Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore thinks Apple should and will embrace the mid-range/pre-paid mobile phone market in 2011. Two-thirds of the 1.5 billion mobile customers worldwide are pre-paid users, and Whitmore believes Apple will try to reach these customers by releasing an unlocked iPhone priced between $300 and $500. Perhaps the iPhone 4S?
“With Nokia and RIMM struggling,” Whitmore said, “the time is right for Apple to aggressively penetrate the mid range smart-phone market to dramatically expand its market share.”

Research In Motion, whose BlackBerry smartphone first caught on with corporate customers, has been drawing interest in its PlayBook tablet from developers of consumer applications, including games and magazines.

The device will come preloaded with programs such as “Tetris,” the building-block puzzle game, and the Kobo e-book reader. Sports fans will also be able to browse an online version of Pro Football Weekly magazine.
RIM, which hasn’t had as much success as Apple or Google in getting independent developers to create consumer apps for the BlackBerry, is trying to gain ground with the PlayBook, which goes on sale April 19. The tablet will have a new operating system, a dual-core processor, and the capability to play applications for Google’s Android platform(Dell inspiron b120 Battery,Dell kd476 Battery).
“It’s one of the fastest devices out there,” said Travis Boatman, senior vice president at Electronic Arts, the second-largest video-game publisher. “You take a good software environment and great hardware, you’ve got a device that designers and developers can create great content on.”
The Redwood City, Calif.-based company will release “Tetris” and “Need for Speed Undercover,” a car racing game, on the PlayBook.
RIM is debuting the PlayBook as it tries to combat market share losses in the smartphone business to Apple and companies that use Android, including Motorola Mobility.
RIM may sell 250,000 PlayBooks in its fiscal first quarter, which began Feb. 27, and 5.4 million over the year, said Alkesh Shah, an analyst with Evercore Partners Inc.
While RIM shares have climbed 18 percent since the PlayBook was unveiled Sept. 27, the stock slid 11 percent March 25 after the company said it will have to spend more to develop and market the PlayBook, a lower-margin device than the company’s overall product range.
RIM is opening the PlayBook to Android apps to give customers a wider range of choices. There are more than 150,000 apps in the Android Market, compared with more than 25,000 in BlackBerry App World and more than 350,000 in Apple’s App Store.
Software tools for making Android apps work on the PlayBook will be available this summer, said Tyler Lessard, who heads up RIM’s developer(Acer aspire one zg5 Battery,Acer batbl50l6 Battery) relations.
Android is the world’s fastest-growing smartphone platform and is also gaining tablet market share. Android tablets captured 22 percent of global shipments in the three months to Dec. 31, up from 2.3 percent in the preceding quarter, according to Strategy Analytics.
The iPad’s share dropped to 75 percent of shipments from about 95 percent three months earlier, it said.
“Developers really struggled to create apps for BlackBerrys” before, said Shah, who is based in New York. He rates RIM “overweight.” “The ability for developers to port Android makes it a more compelling tablet.”

If you are a current resident of England you will soon have two new Toshiba laptops available to you, April to be more precise. The Toshiba Satellite C670 and C670D are both 17.3″ laptops but the two are based around two different and competing processing technologies from Intel and AMD.

Some other things to expect for both notebooks are 2x USB ports, 2.0 ports, a multi card reader, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, a 10 digit numeric keypad with multi touch controls, a VGA web camera and a DVD Super Multi drive.
Toshiba hasn’t shown any indications at this time for launching these two notebooks in the US. Also pricing for the UK hasn’t been released yet but from the specs. we can take a guess the pricing will be affordable across both models.
MSI and their C-series of laptops has grown to have a dozen different models for you to choose from with the addition of two new models. Each of the two new C-series laptops offer you access to the latest and greatest processors from Intel’s new Sandy Bridge line-up of Core i3/i5/i7 CPU’s.
