Apple announcing 20.3 Million iPhones more than Nokia and Samsung

The first of the five biggest smartphone makers announced their results for the second quarter 2011 with Apple announcing 20.3 Million iPhones. Wow. That is a monster quarter by Apple not because it grew by 9% quarter-on-quarter (three months ago the iPhone grew by 15% quarter-on-quarter) - the reason this is superb performance, is that Apple managed the growth in both unit sales and market share - is that there was no new iPhone 5 released for late June.
So, I am tentatively projecting iPhones's market share to be 19%, up one percentage point from 18% in 1Q. Apple is now closing in on selling 1 out of every 5 smartphones on the planet. Awesome for the smartphone brand which is by far the most expensive phone among the major brands (i.e. excluding the luxury phones like Vertu and Tag Heuer etc). Apple obviously grew revenues and grew profits massively this past quarter. It also reported excellent sales in its iPads and Macs. Only iPod sales declined (being partly cannibalized by the iPhone and iPad).

Apple Up, Nokia Tumbles
How does this set the stage for global hegemony in smartphone handset makers? It's an awesome first salvo in the battle among the big 3. We hear from every market that Nokia sales in smartphones are down. Nokia will report on Thursday. Nokia sold 24.3 Million in the first quarter but its quite likely Nokia's fall in sales will drop it below the iPhone in smartphones (they will remain the world's biggest mobile phone handset maker when we add 'dumbphones').

But yes, if Nokia reports sales that dip under the 20M level, so any smartphone sales level in the 'teens' (19M, 18M, 17M etc) then yes, iPhone will have jumped past Nokia and relegated Nokia from the top dog status in smartphone makers for the first time in smartphone history (as Nokia invented the space and has been biggest smartphone maker from the beginning up to now).

If so, it was this article who first called it on June 15, that Apple has passed Nokia in smartphone makers.

But that is before we have Samsung's numbers - they report on July 29. The gossip around Samsung talks of a monster quarter there. In 1Q 2011, Samsung sold 12.6 Million smartphones and under normal times, it would be nearly impossible for one brand to jump from under 13 Million to around 20 Million in one quarter, but these are not normal times and Samsung ships smartphones on three different operating systems: Android, Bada, Windows Phone 7.

After the Nokia smartphone customer give-away of the Stephen Elop 'windfall' when the Symbian Nokia phone sales collapsed from February, now is the time for rival smartphone makers to gobble up all those disgruntled Nokia Symbian customers. Obviously Apple has taken 1.7 Million of those. But the analysts around Samsung are estimating something around 19 Million smartphone sales for the South Korean maker. Samsung mobile phones unit CEO just yesterday released a bullish statement about the full year 2011 Samsung smartphone sales, saying that Samsung will exceed its 60 Million smartphone sales target (up from 25 Million sales in 2010 making Samsung the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturer this year). It means a Samsung 2Q could be tantalizingly close to the Apple 20.3 Million number. My gut says Sammy will not quite make it this quarter but Nomura earlier in June already called it for Samsung to have become biggest smartphone maker this quarter, so it will be very close and if they have a surprising surge, they could have done it. We'll know on July 29.
Other Business News:
Apple's 1.7 Million Extra Sales...
Where did the 1.7M unit sales growth come from? Apple obviously has benefitted from the Nokia give-away, but also remember RIM reported a decline in smartphone sales for Q2. And RIM's loss in BlackBerry sales was specific to major losses in the North American market (while growing international sales). So the iPhone has taken some of Blackberry's American Pie, while another part of iPhone growth came by spoiling Nokia's European Vacation. Was there also perhaps for Apple a China Syndrome, we will probably know soon as we get the various analysts reporting in and the data filtered and analyzed.

Meanwhile please remember, on the platforms for smartphones, Google's Android is by far the biggest now, and they sold about 49 Million smartphones in Q2 so yes, Android selling about 2.5x more smartphones now globally than the iPhone. So while Apple is likely now the world's biggest actual mobile phone smartphone handset maker, the operating system with most smartphones sold will continue to be, with an ever-increasing lead - Google's Android.

So, let's wait until we get the Nokia numbers before we formally celebrate Apple toppling Nokia from biggest smartphone crown. That is very likely to have happened now and we'll know in two days. And then we have to wait another week to find out if Apple has also taken the crown (or if it was grabbed by Samsung). But Congratulations to Cupertino! This is a MONSTER quarter once again. Full 10 out of 10 points for excellence in smartphone sales. With almost a year-old design, Apple still grows unit sales, increases revenues, increases profits, and increases market share. Excellent Apple. Truly great.

And two superb silver linings on the record-breaking quarter for Apple. We are expecting the next iPhone (maybe iPhone 4S or may be iPhone 5) and expected to be sold in late August or September. When that new iPhone comes to the market, it will be again Apple loyalists camping outside stores and long lines waiting for it. That hysteria will boost iPhone sales to a new record.

How to Replace the battery only takes a couple of minutes

For amateur and professional photographers alike, there's nothing more frustrating then when you're about to get a great shot with your digital camera and when you push the shutter and nothing happens. Replacing the battery only takes a couple of minutes and helps insure that you capture your next shot.

  • Watch the meter. Many digital cameras have a small battery icon that appears on the LCD screen. Keeping an eye on this helps you know when it's time to change the battery.
  • Examine the batteries. You can do this by either taking the batteries that are already in the camera out, or by looking through the owner's manual to your camera and reading to find out what kind of battery your camera requires. Some cameras take common battery types, , and others take model specific lithium-ion batteries.
  • Make a trip to the store. Check out the electronics department for less common battery types. More common types should be available almost anywhere: drug stores, discount stores and convenience stores.
  • Turn off your camera and replace the battery. Many cameras have a sticker on the inside with a diagram that shows you which way to put the batteries in.
  • Close the battery compartment and turn your camera back on.
Some batteries are rechargeable. Cameras that come with lithium-ion batteries also have a power cord that will recharge the battery. If your camera has this type of battery, you can recharge it many times before needing to replace it.
Consider investing in rechargeable batteries if your digital camera takes a common type of battery. The initial cost is more than it would be for disposable batteries, but over time you will save money. Getting two sets is a great idea, because then one set can charge while the other is in your camera.

NEC plan to drive the expansion of household energy storage systems in 2012

NEC announced today the sales launch of a household energy storage system equipped with lithium-ion batteries that automatically controls electrical power in the home. Initially, 100 units of this industry first* system will be available for home construction companies and businesses beginning 18 July 2011.

This system automatically carries out electric power control by connecting to a home's distribution panel and enabling interactive coordination with a power company's power supply system and a household's electric devices, solar power systems and other equipment.
This interactivity enables the system to store power during nighttime hours, when power consumption is low, then to use the stored power during afternoon hours, when power consumption reaches its peak. This reduces both the demand on power companies as well as household electricity charges.
Moreover, the system is equipped with transmission functions that enable remote observation of its operational status and convenient provision of maintenance services.
Recently, in consideration of the supply and demand conditions for electricity during summer in Japan, initiatives to shift the peak afternoon power consumption time and reduce the overall volume of power consumption are steadily advancing. Furthermore, households have become increasingly aware of the importance of access to electricity for essential needs in the event of an emergency or blackout, in addition to the necessity of power conservation.

NextComputing rolled-out a new battery powered portable workstation

Generally, industries such as military intelligence, oil and gas exploration, digital video production and network testing require high-performance hardware featuring full-powered CPUs, high-end 3D graphics, fast RAID storage, and PCI (News - Alert) expansion slots for their demanding and mission-critical applications. Typically, when in the field, these applications are developed using large, non-mobile systems or is scaled down to run on a laptop for mobility due to various constraints, thereby making the task difficult.
In an effort to provide such industries with a complete mobile power computing solution, NextComputing – a provider of portable workstations and dense, small-footprint servers – has rolled-out a new battery powered portable workstation,Radius EX-B.
Based on NextComputing’s (News - Alert) Radius EX all-in-one portable workstation, the new Radius EX-B is the latest addition to the company’s Radius series of mobile computers. Featuring a briefcase-like design, it is the company’s first portable system to feature an integrated battery - for total mobility. This enables the workstation to run for more than two hours on battery.
As a provider of extreme-performance portables and dense streaming rack-mount computers, NextComputing has built the new Radius EX-B mobile computer as a compact, all-in-one package that is easy to transport and set up. Apart from featuring true workstation and server performance, it features a 320W power supply with removable Lithium-ion battery pack and a built-in 17-inch widescreen, high-resolution (1920x1200) LCD monitor.
Built on workstation-class 2nd generation Intel (News - Alert) Core i7 Quad-Core processor or Intel Xeon E3-1200 series processor, the new Radius EX-B mobile computer has been provided with up to 32GB DDR3 memory using 8GB DIMMs; four full-length, full-height PCI Express and PCI expansion slots; integrated Intel HD Graphics or discrete professional graphics solutions from NVIDIA and AMD (News - Alert); and up to 6 terabytes (TB) of fixed or removable storage with multiple RAID options.

Showcasing a brief-case design, the new EX-B mobile computer is not only compact but also features an all-in-one chassis with comfortable leather handle and a convenient carrying case. An optional rolling case with telescoping handle or rugged MIL-STD-810F certified hard case is also provided along with the product.
According to NextComputing, the Radius EX-B can run completely un-tethered, without being plugged into a power source, for over two hours. Apart from enabling users to transport it from room to room within a facility without powering down, it can keep the unit running continuously in the event of a power failure. In addition, it can run the system in a remote environment where power is intermittent or unreliable such as military base station or trailer.
“Customers across many markets depend on our portable workstations and servers because they are the most flexible and capable mobile systems available, while also being the smallest and lightest,” said Bob Labadini, president and CTO of NextComputing, in a statement. “Because they are powerful, enterprise-class computers, these systems have traditionally required external power, usually from a wall outlet or a DC source like a vehicle. The Radius EX-B changes all this. Our customers now have a fully mobile, all-in-one workstation, able to run their applications from literally anywhere.”

HP has a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core APQ8060

HP TouchPad vs Apple iPad 2
To which tablet is the new HP TouchPad comparable to? I think it’s the Apple iPad 2. These two have some very similar features. One of them is thescreen size which is 9.7 inches. Both have the same 1024x768-pixel resolution as well! We all know that the iPad 2 is the most preferred device and having the same screen size and resolution doesn’t help HP in any way. Perhaps if they made it a bit bigger like 10-inches they would be at a bigger advantage; a 9.7 inches is so 2010!
Both have the latest kind of processor. HP has a Qualcomm Snapdragon dual core APQ8060 that spins at 1.2GHz while iPad 2 has Apple A5 dual core running at 1GHz. I think on this end, HP TouchPad is at an advantage, at least on papers!

As for memory, the TouchPad has 1GB RAM while iPad 2 has only 512 MB.
OS: TouchPad boasts the latest webOS operating system which is the 3.0 version and iPad 2 has iOS 4.3. webOS 3.0 offers ease-of-use, multitasking functions as well as open architecture. This means that it offers more flexibility that would be a big advantage for personal and business use but it's important to mention that despite that webOS is the successor to Palm OS, having the TouchPad means you will be like a beta tester for this tablet! The iPad 2 is a big winner considering it's a second generation tablet and already used by millions of people around the world!
As for connectivity, Both have Bluetooth 2.1 +EDR technology by the way however the iPad 2 offers more advantage because it can connect to the internet through WiFi and 3G while the TouchPad only offers WiFi connectivity. People who use tablets are more or less always on the go so they want more connectivity options. Offering just WiFi is a setback for the TouchPad.
Both have cameras but iPad 2 offers two. It has 720p rear camera and a VGA front-facing camera for video chats. The TouchPad on the other hand only carries a 1.3MP front camera!
Battery life, Apple iPad 2 claims to deliver 10 hours of battery life which makes the TouchPad 2 hours short with only 8 hours.

Apple has ambitious plans for the 2012 iPhone

Adding on to what they had already reported, The Wall Street Journal is reporting Apple has ambitious plans for the 2012 iPhone (yes we’re calling these by year now, get with the program), including a new way of charging.

According to them, Apple has been experimenting with various changes to introduce a new way of charging.
Investors expect a bigger boost to Apple’s phone business next year. People briefed on Apple’s plans said the company is planning a major iPhone revamp then, with one person saying the company has been experimenting with features such as a new way of charging the phone.

It’s not clear what exactly Apple plans to do. If we look at the phone market, we know that theres a number of third party cases and bases for “wireless” inductive charging. HP (formerly Palm) has even gone as far as introducing that as a feature for the Palm phones, with the Touchstone charging dock (which I have to admit looks rather nice).
Touchstone also goes beyond charging, letting you place the phone on a tablet and sharing URL’s, among other things. The idea of a new way of charging, perhaps without cables, fits perfectly with the new wireless sync and wireless backup in iOS 5, but we’ll have to wait and see what Apple does.
Apple are planning a 'complete revamp' of the popular handset for the iPhone 6, according to the Wall Street Journal, while it also suggested that Apple is working on a long-awaited smaller and cheaper version of the iPhone.
This budget model will feature an edge-to-edge display, and will target new markets in developing countries. Both the iPhone 6 and the budget version are expected to arrive in 2012.
Before any of this is finalised however, Apple's iPhone 5 is reportedly due to hit the shops in September this year.
