Twitter's Mysterious outgoing Interesting Details

The first Chief Technology Officer of one of the most important communication technology companies of our time has left his job today - and for a guy who made public disclosure easier than ever, we hardly knew the man.
People close to the company say he's a quiet, humble and very smart man. His Twitter profile, @gregpass, makes no mention of his work at the company and he never Tweets about it. He's Tweeted thousands of words over the past three years though and I just looked at every one of them. (Well, almost every one; the archive only goes back so far. Greg, could you...oh, nevermind.) Here are ten interesting things you probably didn't know about Twitter's mysterious outgoing CTO.
  • Pass appears to have never participated in any of the Google Groups email lists the company uses to communicate with the outside world. The only reference to him in those conversations was a passing note that some mystery could perhaps be attributed to "Greg Pass magic going on...behind the scenes."

  • Pass created his Twitter account just 3 months before his company Summize was acquired and he became VP of Engineering at Twitter. He must be a fast learner.

  • "Being surrounded by approximately 1,400 butterflies, and perspiring." - Twitter CTO Greg Pass
  • When the company was acquired in a very high-profile deal, something outsiders consider one of the most important moves the company has made, Pass made no mention of it on his Twitter account. He merely wrote that week that he was "packing for a twip."

  • Almost all of Pass's Tweets are cryptic or mystical. "Coincidentally: Mongolian yurt." "Being surrounded by approximately 1,400 butterflies, and perspiring." His blog is full of posts about art and science.

  • Pass has slowed down on Twitter lately. He tweeted more than 1200 times over the past 2 years prior, but only 21 times so far this year.

  • Pass has never used the name of competitor Facebook in a Tweet. He has, though, mentioned the band Devo at least 14 times, more than any other single topic of conversation.

  • His second-favorite topic to Tweet about is eyes, eg. "Contemplating the differences between winged-eyes and eyed-wings." Those who would call Twitter users big of mouth and small of brain would be well served to appreciate the disposition of the man who's led the building of the technology over the past three years.

  • Pass is not very into one of the company's most (to me) exciting features: Twitter Lists. He's only created one - an automated list called Conversationalists.

  • Pass's first handful of people he followed on Twitter look like the staff list of Summize, but it turns out he's been following one of Twitter's newest hires, data visualization pro William Couch, since before he started following @jack and @biz. @Couch just joined the Twitter team a few weeks ago after working for years as a designer at USA Today.

Microsoft is expected to release Avatar Kinect

The update will make its way to Xbox owners over the course of the next two weeks. Microsoft is distributing the update in six waves in order to ensure a high quality deployment. “Just like any other update to our service, you will know you’ve received it when you turn on your Xbox 360 console, connect to Xbox LIVE and receive a notification to download the update,” says Microsoft’s MajorNelson. Xbox owners should expect to see the update notification between May 19 and May 30. The Spring 2011 dashboard update includes the following:
    • International PayPal support – Gamers can now use PayPal to buy content such as Microsoft Points,Xbox LIVE Gold subscriptions and Games on Demand titles. The functionality will not be available in the following regions: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Hungary, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan.
    • Auto-standby feature – Console will be placed on standby if it’s idle for more than one hour, helping to reduce power consumption. This feature will be automatically enabled after you download the update. You can change this setting in the System Settings on your console.
Microsoft’s previous dashboard update in January locked out a number of console pirates from its Xbox LIVEservice. The company blocked some popular flashed firmware disc drive modifications with the update. Pirates typically flash their DVD drives with modified firmware to bypass Microsoft’s game security checks.”Anti-piracy 2.5″ is the software giant’s latest attempt to thwart console pirates. It’s not yet clear whether the Spring 2011 has enhanced this protection any further.
Perhaps the most eagerly awaited update is Avatar Kinect. Microsoft is expected to release Avatar Kinect on May 27. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer originally introduced Avatar Kinect using his own Xbox LIVE avatar at CES earlier this year. Avatar Kinect is a unique way for Kinect users to interact with each other. Kinect supports facial tracking and even facial expressions that will allow users to talk to each other with their avatars. Microsoft is calling Avatar Kinect a “social experience” that will bring your avatar to life.

The reasons why use of Flickr has declined over time

The latest example of this pain point comes from Flickr designer Timoni West, who has publicly criticized the service on her personal blog, in a post called “The Most Important Page On Flickr.” In the post Timoni links to the Flickr Contacts > Recent Uploads page and breaks down what’s wrong with it, namely that on a micro-level that there is no chronological way to sort photos, the thumbnail size is too small and there’s no way to see all of a user’s recent photos without visiting their profile.

But what West finds most problematic is that …
“The page fails on a fundamental level—it’s supposed to be where you find out what’s happened on Flickr while you were away. The current design, unfortunately, encourages random clicking, not informed exploration.Toshiba pa3356u-3brs Battery, Dell studio 1537 Laptop Battery
The page isn’t just outdated, it’s actively hurting Flickr, as members’ social graphs on the site become increasingly out of sync with real life. Old users forget to visit the site, new sign ups are never roped in, and Flickr, who increased member sign-ups substantially in 2010, will forego months of solid work when new members don’t come back.”
Power Flickr users, desperate for a platform that provides the sense of community early Flickr did, are moving on to Instagram, 500px and the recently launched Mlkshk. As Flickr user and developer Buzz Andersen put it, “This highly perceptive post by @Timoni almost completely covers the reasons my use of Flickr has declined over time.”
Many feel like Flickr has swerved from its original course of being a community of photographers and photosharers to being a storage center. Jason Kottke (Kottke!) referred to the problem as such, “Flickr has become a shoebox under the bed instead of the door of the refrigerator or workplace bulletin board. “
Thomas Hawk is one of the early Flickr evangelists who moved on because of lack of community, leaving the service for 500px, “500px is like Flickr was in the early day. They care about the users. Flickr doesn’t anymore … [500px CEO] Ian Sobolev is interacting with users like Stewart/Caterina did. Flickr censors, bans, deletes and talks down to their users.”
To save power keep documents to be presented in the hard drive itself as USB attachments will drain power.

Dell New 10-inch Tablet offer up to 8 hours of battery life

HP for their EliteBook family of professional-grade notebook computers will be making some new additions soon. New reports have exposed a new standard notebook and a newconvertible tablet PC (a notebook with a swivel touchscreen LCD).
The names for these new models are HP EliteBook 2560p and HP EliteBook 2760p Tablet PC. Release dates are unknown as well as prices but the features coming with either model are available. For the main features keep on reading.
First off these models offer LED back-lit 12.5-inch HD anti-glare displays as a standard, but the 2760p will offer a touch support (pen only option and pen + finger option) and WXGA (1280×800) HD instead of the HD  (1366 x 768) the 2560p possess.Dell inspiron 6400 battery, Dell inspiron 1525 Battery
Other things like system storage and system memory these notebooks have nice offerings. Both have speedy DDR3 memory up to 8GB and max. 320GB (2760p) or 500GB (2560p) HDD (7200RPM) or a 160GB SSD (faster than HDD by good margin on average) storage solutions.
As for processing prowess these two EliteBooks have options from the up-to-date Core i5 an i7Intel Sandy Bridge chips. Options include dual-core chips only; a 2.30 GHz Intel Core i5-2410M, a 2.50 GHz Intel Core i5-2520M, a 2.60 GHz Intel Core i5-2540M and a 2.70 GHz Intel Core i7-2620M. If you don’t follow processor tech. too much each of those chips will be enough for all office applications and of course multi-tasking.
    Other Business News
For features you should expect in any modern laptop, ports and wireless connectivity, these models have a lot of them. Both models will come with two USB 2.0 ports (one is powered so you can charge other devices) and a combo USB 2.0 and eSATA (fast port good for external hard drives or CD/DVD/Blu-ray drives). There is also Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR standard for wireless connectivity on either model but you can configure up to HSPA+ Mobile Broadband too.
A connector port that seems to be missing for either of these upcoming models is a native HDMI output. Both the HP EliteBook 2560p and 2760p tablet have only VGA video output built-in and the 2560p has DisplayPort connector.
HP has kept the austere, down-to-business look of previous EliteBooks with its latest industrial design, but dressed it up a bead-blasted platinum finish, chemically strengthened glass trackpad, brushed-aluminum keyboard deck, and aluminum alloy hinges. Even the little details received attention. The janky capacitive touch buttons above the keyboard that were in vogue a few years back have reverted to hard buttons you can actually click. The bottom – normally a No Man’s Land of vents, labels, logos doors and slots, has been stripped, sculpted and styled into a relatively smooth plane of black plastic with a single access door. In a nod to the MacBook’s microscopic LEDs, the front has laser-cut indicators for Wi-Fi, power, charging and disk drive activity. This is a clean-looking notebook.
At 6.01 pounds, the EliteBook falls at the heavier end of the spectrum for 15-inch notebooks. A budget box like Gateway’s EV Series can easily hit 5.3 pounds, and even the comparably tough MacBook Pro 15 weighs 5.6 pounds. The extra weight makes the EliteBook a bit of a bear to handle with one hand, but it doesn’t quite reach the oppressive weight of a true desktop replacement. Depth of 1.34 inches is also nothing to brag about, but it comes with the territory in the “business rugged” class. A fully rugged notebook like Panasonic’s ToughBook 52, for by comparison, spans a porky two inches.

This wasn't a bad time for the Red Sox to roll into the Bronx. The Yankees needed something to jolt them out of a haze of careless errors and rafts of runners left in scoring position.
"Well, that is my hope. That we start playing better baseball," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said as Boston arrived for a three-game series. "The Red Sox are obviously a very talented team and we're hoping it brings out the best in us.
"We have not played very well in the last week-and-a-half, two weeks."
Girardi's club had lost six of its last nine games entering Friday night, and the Yanks had committed 12 errors in their last seven games – not to mention a few baserunning blunders and defensive lapses that fail to appear in box scores.
"We're not firing on all cylinders either," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.
But at least the Red Sox had rebounded from their dreadful start, with Adrian Gonzalez mashing the ball and Carl Crawford finally starting to hit his stride.
The Red Sox were 0-6 to start the season, until the Yankees arrived at Fenway Park and dropped two of three games. Whether or not the Yanks helped light that spark under the Red Sox, the atmosphere generated by the rivalry might serve to shake either club out of a fog.Cheap Dell 6400 Battery, , Dell d830 Batteries
"Anytime you add what these two teams bring when they're on the field together — from the fans, to the excitement and all that comes with this — that stuff makes the game," Jason Varitek said. "Can you raise your level of play? I'm not sure, but all that can certainly help."
The Yankees failed to help themselves in losing two of three games against the Royals. In Wednesday's extra-inning loss, the Yanks left 15 men on base and were 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Thursday's loss featured two errors in Kansas City's six-run second inning.
"Sometimes they're just physical errors. Sometimes guys can be frustrated about the way their season's going, or their at-bats that day — it can be a number of different things," Girardi said in a general response to the club's recent lapses.
Mostly, Girardi felt it might be caused by a player being overanxious to make something happen.
"You try to diagnose every [poor play] and why it happened," Girardi said. "But I don't think any of us can exactly tell where it stems from."
Still, the manager did not push the issue under the clubhouse rug.
"We talked on Sunday," Girardi said of addressing the state of the Yankees play while in Texas, where they concluded a 3-4 road trip.
"I think all of our guys know what it takes," Girardi said. "You can't just try to get through months. You have to take advantage of each month in front of you."
That's exactly the big-picture view the Red Sox forced themselves to reexamine in early April.
"We stunk at pitching. We stunk at hitting. And we didn't field the ball so well," Varitek said. "You mix in some quality starts, all of a sudden your offense gets going and you start playing with a little more confidence."
And though the spotlight is a little harsher this weekend, "We don't get extra credit for winning a game here," Francona said.

Third Rail Mobility's new battery Tips

For every gadget that claims to charge an iPhone on the go, there's sure to be a constituency that swears by it (or quite possibly at it). With external battery packs from HyperMac, Zagg, Kensington, Newer andMonoprice, you can dangle a cable; with battery-equipped cases from Exogear, Boost and Kensington you can keep your extra joules right next to your phone. We've seen some clever inventions (the RichardSolo 1800, the PowerEZ) and too-clever ones (the XPower charger-in-a-cable), but precious few options that give you power when you need it without adding weight, aggravation and charging hassles.Dell inspiron 9400 laptop battery
Since Macworld Expo this year, I've been happily using the US$79.99 mophie juice pack air with my iPhone 4 when I need extended power. It's light (about 68 grams), packs a solid 1500 mAh battery (Acer as07b31 Battery, Hp pavilion dv4 battery) and charges reliably and simply with a Micro USB cable. It's a great product, but it does bulk up the phone substantially; if you carry the iPhone in a pocket, you'll notice the difference in weight and size (mophie's 2000 mAh product, the $99.95 juice pack plus, adds even more bulk and mass). I also don't need extra power most of the time; it's only when I've got a busy day on the road and I can't charge here and there. If there were a way to get the all-in-one convenience of the juice pack without having to carry the battery all the time, I'd love it.
That's why I was excited to check out Third Rail Mobility's new battery & case system for the iPhone 4, developed by a family of entrepreneurs who say they aren't afraid to touch the 'third rail' of mobile consumer electronics in addressing poor battery life. The system, on sale today, pairs a slimline 1250 mAh battery with a light protective case. But this battery comes off, attaching firmly when you need it and staying out of the way in your bag or jacket when you don't. I've been testing a prerelease unit for the past week, hoping to figure out if it truly is the best of both worlds.
The Third Rail system includes the iPhone 4 case and a single 'Smart Battery' bundled together (SRP is $89.99), although both components will also be available separately ($39.99 for the case and $59.99 for additional batteries). The case is straightforward black, and fits snugly on the iPhone 4 with a bit of effort. Alone, the case weighs 26 grams; that's scarcely more than the 20-gram Gumdrop plain plastic case seen in the 'family photo' above (the mophie is on the left, the Gumdrop in the middle, and the Third Rail on the right, battery disconnected). Once you put it on the iPhone, it feels like any other well-made slim case; the rubberized sides give it a bit of grip, and the wide control cutout on the left side accomodates both AT&T and Verizon models. At the bottom, there are audio vents similar to the ones on the juice pack, plus a Micro USB port for charging and a charge/idle switch.
The business side of the case is the back, where there are four slots and a three-contact charge connector lying flat. That's where the Smart Battery snaps on, locking into place quite firmly and providing power when needed. The battery is less than a centimeter deep and, surprisingly, doesn't make the phone uncomfortable to hold or knock it off balance. Once you connect it, flip the charge/idle switch from orange (bypass) to black (charge) and off you go.
The bottom of the battery features a charge indicator button, plus a standalone Micro USB charging port and a custom 'Out' port. Yes, that Out port means what you think it means: you can use the Smart Battery to charge other things, not just your iPhone. With the included adapter, you get a USB female port that you can attach to the charging cable for your Kindle, your Bluetooth headset, your GPS -- even your iPad, although it will trickle-charge rather than the full 10W quick-charge. That's the kind of flexibility that will let you leave a heavier/bulkier battery pack (Mitac bp-8050 Battery, Sony vgp-bps2 Battery) behind for short trips.
The battery pack's tricks don't end with USB power for other gadgets. The same locking tabs that connect it to the phone case allow you to stack up to 6 Third Rail Smart Batteries atop each other; plug in the bottom one and they'll all charge up eventually, which makes this an interesting solution for businesses that want to offer battery extenders for employees on the go. If you connect multiple Smart Batteries without attaching the power cord, they'll negotiate amongst themselves to consolidate the available power and provide as many fully-charged batteries as possible (the 40 percent-charged battery will drain to charge the 75 percent-charged battery, for example). Third Rail says the batteries will be fully transferable to future case designs, so if you switch up to an iPhone 5 someday you can keep your batteries for the new case.
When combined with the battery, the Third Rail system weighs only a hair less than the juice pack (65 grams vs. 68 grams), giving it a similar heft and pocket impact. The juice pack's curved lines and battery shroud make it theoretically less likely to snag on clothing, but the TR battery hugs the case quite closely -- I didn't have any problems with snaggage while I used it.
The charging mojo of the Third Rail system was substantial. I was able to take my in-use phone from 10% charge up to 60% in less than two hours while taking the Smart Battery from full charge down to zero. By comparison, the mophie juice pack's slightly larger battery makes it up to about 65-70% charge from 10% in about the same amount of time.

Battery Business - Lithium Battery Industry Keeps Going

If you open up your mobile phone, or laptop, or iPad, you'll find a lithium battery. If you own a hybrid or electric car, it's likely powered by a lithium battery as well. Lithium is a metal that's light and cheap, and it is increasingly the material of choice for battery makers.

Lithium could, in the future, replace a lot of the oil we now use for energy — which raises questions about how much we can realistically rely on the metal. Seth Fletcher, senior editor atPopular Science, explores this in a new book, called Bottled Lightning: Superbatteries, Electric Cars and The New Lithium Economy.
    Lithium Logistics
"You have to store metallic lithium in oil, otherwise it tarnishes," Fletcher explains to NPR's Steve Inskeep. "Actually, it's so volatile it doesn't exist in nature in its pure form. So if you're mining for lithium, you never find big arm-sized veins of lithium metal because they just don't exist."
Most of the world's lithium, Fletcher says, comes from a series of salt lakes in a high-altitude region where Bolivia, Chile and Argentina meet. It's called the "lithium triangle."
"Over the years, the water has absorbed minerals and settled sony laptop batteries,Hp 510 Battery,Hp dv2000 Battery in these giant salt sponges and now there's this rich brine," he says.
When the water evaporates, it leaves behind an olive oil-like substance that has a small percentage of lithium, which is then processed into lithium carbonate, a white powder. And according to Fletcher, there's more than enough to meet the rising demand.
"I don't know of any serious person in the automotive industry or in the lithium industry who believed that there is a serious, long-term supply problem," he says. "In fact, for the next 10 years there will probably be an oversupply of Dell vostro 1500 Batteries,Dell vostro 1510 Batterybecause so many companies have now moved into the market."
And unlike the impact of mining other natural resources, concentrating lithium is and "environmentally benign" process, Fletcher says. "It's about as low impact as mining can get. They're really just pumping water up ... And there are really no toxic chemicals in a lithium-ion battery."
'A Gaping Hole In The Grid'
By using lithium batteries to store energy — say, from a wind farm or a bank of solar cells — Fletcher believes that energy can be more efficiently stored.
"What a lot of companies are working on right now is building gigantic banks of lithium-ion batteries that can store energy from power plants," he says. "Right now we don't store energy effectively at all. That's a big gaping hole in the grid right now."
A limiting factor to the batteries, however, is the amount they can store and how quickly they can be recharged. While companies work to produce better ,Dell latitude d630 Battery,Dell vostro 1000 Battery, Fletcher argues, people should take advantage of the current uses.
"Batteries are going to get better, but we don't have a battery that can power a car for 500 miles and then recharge in 15 minutes," he says. "It's going to be a long time before we have that battery, but the batteries we do have right now can do a lot of incredibly useful things and they can do them very efficiently and affordably. I think we would be wise to use them to do those things while we're simultaneously developing future chemistries that maybe could power a car 500 miles and recharge in 15 minutes."
